Fairing V Piece by Alan (#168)

I know a few people have been looking for that lower full fairing V piece, I refused to pay 140.00 bucks for one so I made my own. I spent 10 bucks on the materials and it works great.

I bought 1 1/8 X 1/2 by 8 foot piece of aluminum and one 1/4 x 1/2 by 8 foot channel also made of aluminum. I also bought a roll of 1/2 inch one side adhesive weather stripping. I got all of these from Menards home improvement store.

I used the flat piece as the V part. The channel as the cross brace. I traced the outline of each side of the fairing on cardboard. I measured how long the V piece needed to be then bent it in the middle over my knee. I then clamped the V piece in the vice and shaped/bent it with a brass hammer to make it follow the contour of the fairing. Do this for both sides. Then I placed the V piece in the fairing and bent it by hand to fit the curvature of the fairing on both sides. I cut a piece of channel to the proper length and angles. (took two tries to get it right. I then made four L brackets drilled and riveted them to the V piece. Then I applied the 1/2 weather strip to the outside of my snazzy new bracket. Then I installed it drilled it, installed my fasteners and was done. Make sure you don't mount the cross brace to high or it will rub on the back side of the front fender.

The whole operation took about two hours and three beers! It looks great, its light, and seems to do the job. If you need this bracket, try and make it yourself. It's probably one of the easier things I have done. And being the cheap bastard I am it feels great to avoid paying yamaha 140 bucks for 10 bucks worth of plastic.
